After World War II the conclusion of the border brought many inconvenient and disadvantageous consequences. Far-reaching possibilities of co-operation in various spheres, in particular in social contacts and cultural connections, were broken.
The reunification of both German states and opening of the border to East-European neighbouring countries have created for the country triangle Bavaria-Saxonia/Thueringen-Bohemia principally new general conditions. Crossborder development as well as co-operation and partnership on the international, national as well as regional level represent one possibility, how to deal with these changes. That's why it is so important, to revitalise the former conjunctions and interconnections. Today the approaching expansion of the EU represents another vigorous challenge for the Region of EUREGIO EGRENSIS.
On February 3rd 1993 finally the fusion of the three associations in consonance with a mutual agreement took place. This was as a matter of fact the moment of establishment of the present european region EUREGIO EGRENSIS with an equivalent organisation. Nowadays the territory of EUREGIO EGRENSIS includes a total area of approx. 17 000 km2 with over 2 millions inhabitants. The term EUREGIO is a shortcut of the meaning "european region". The name EGRENSIS is derived form a Latin stem and marks the territory around Cheb (German name Eger).
The guidelines for work of EUREGIO EGRENSIS determines the joint authority. This consist of three particular representatives of presidential authorities of the individual associations and it is supported by the offices of these three associations.
Joint cross-border committees/constituencies were established in connection
with particular mutual cross-border projects. In the individual associations
there are cross-border committees/constituencies for the areas of "business,
transportation, labour market, infrastructure", "culture, youth
and sport", "travelling, recreation and tourism" as well
as "environment and ecology".
